The blue-gray stone sits naturally against Victorian brick and slate, looks like it's been there a hundred years the day we finish, and is dense enough to shrug off our freeze-thaw winters — as long as the base underneath is built right. That's the part we never skip: a deep, compacted base with proper pitch, so the stone doesn't heave in February.

We install bluestone two ways. Thermal-finish bluestone has a flat, evenly textured surface that's comfortable barefoot and level for furniture — the usual pick for patios. Natural cleft has more texture and color variation, which looks right on bluestone walkways and steps, where a little grip underfoot is a good thing.
