Patio Design & Hardscape in the North End

By Allan at American Elm Landscape · building across Boston since 1989

The North End has the smallest outdoor spaces in the whole city — a brick patch out back, a sliver of courtyard off the alley, a roof deck with a skyline view. We love this work. When there's no room to spare, design is the whole game, and that's exactly what we're good at.

This is Boston's oldest neighborhood: narrow streets, centuries-old buildings, and lots packed wall to wall. Building here takes patience and a real respect for the place — both of which we bring after 37 years in the city.

Where we work in the North End

We build all through the neighborhood — the lanes off Hanover and Salem Streets, the courtyards near North Square and the Paul Revere House, the blocks up toward Copp's Hill and the Old North Church, and the buildings along the Greenway edge. These are some of the oldest, tightest lots in America, and we treat them that way.

Small space, done right

Getting materials through those streets and alleys is its own adventure, and we've done it plenty. We plan the logistics carefully, keep the worksite tight, and treat your building and your neighbors with respect. Then we make every inch count — because in the North End, that's the difference between a leftover corner and a place you actually want to sit.

What we build in the North End

On a recent courtyard off Salem Street, we turned a shaded, forgotten back corner into a small brick sitting area with built-in planters and low lighting — proof that even the tightest North End lot can become a retreat.

From a customer

“Allan and his crew are awesome! He came through in a pinch when we were out of town during the first big storm this year. Love this crew and will be reaching out again.” — Andrea D.

Common questions

Can you really build a patio in a North End courtyard that small?

Yes — small, awkward spaces are our specialty. With the right layout and materials, even a few hundred square feet of courtyard becomes a genuine outdoor room you'll use all season.

How do you get materials through North End streets and alleys?

Planning and a lot of hand-carrying. We schedule deliveries around the neighborhood's famously tight access, keep the worksite compact, and clean up so your building and neighbors are never blocked in.

Do you build North End roof decks and terraces?

We build the patio surface and hardscape elements on roof decks and terraces where the building's structure and permits allow. Structural and permitting requirements vary by building, so we assess yours before we start.
