A pool is only as good as the deck around it. A pool deck takes a beating most patios never see — constant splash-out, standing water, sun, salt or chlorine, and the same freeze-thaw winters that crack everything else. Build it like an ordinary patio and it heaves, gets slippery, and pools water in a couple of seasons. Build it right and it’s the best seat in the yard for thirty summers. We’ve done the hardscape around plenty of Greater Boston pools, and here’s how we approach it.
What makes a pool deck different
- Slip resistance & comfort. We choose textured, lighter-colored pavers that grip when wet and stay cooler underfoot, so the deck is safe and comfortable barefoot.
- Drainage first. A pool deck sheds water constantly. We grade it to pitch splash-out away from the pool and the house, and use permeable options where it makes sense so water never sits.
- Salt, chlorine & freeze-thaw. We use dense pavers and natural stone that resist pool chemicals and low water absorption, so there’s no internal moisture to freeze and spall the surface.
- Coping done right. The edge around the water is where looks and safety meet. We set clean, level coping that ties the deck to the pool and holds up to daily wear.
- A base built to last. Same as every job — a deep, compacted base with edge restraints, so the deck stays flat and level around the water instead of shifting.
New pool or existing — we work around both
Putting in a new pool? We design the deck and poolscape around it. Already have a pool with a cracked, heaved, or dated deck? We tear out the old surface, fix the grading and base, and set a new deck with fresh coping — often the single biggest upgrade you can make to an older pool.

What's the best material for a New England pool deck?

Can you build around my existing pool?
Yes — new pools or existing ones. We match coping and paving, re-grade for drainage, and replace tired or heaved decks built without a proper base.
