A retaining wall is holding back tons of soil, and that soil gets heavy and full of pressure when it's wet. If there's no drainage behind the wall, water builds up, freezes and expands in winter, and pushes the wall until it leans, bulges, or blows out. It's the #1 cause of failed walls, and it's the corner most crews cut. We build every wall with crushed-stone backfill, filter fabric, and a perforated drain pipe that relieves that pressure — plus a deep compacted base, proper batter (backward lean), and geogrid reinforcement on taller walls. As an NDS Certified Professional Drainage Contractor, water management isn't an add-on for us; it's the whole point.

In most Massachusetts towns, a wall over about 4 feet (measured from the bottom of the base) needs a permit and an engineer's stamp. We know the local rules across Greater Boston, build to code, reinforce taller walls with geogrid, and bring in a licensed engineer when the height or load calls for it — so your wall is safe, permitted, and built to hold.

How much does a retaining wall cost?

Usually priced by the square face foot, depending on material, height, access, and how much drainage and engineering it needs. A short garden wall is modest; a tall structural wall is a bigger investment. Every job gets a free written estimate.

Why do walls lean, bulge, or fail?
